The Historical Society of Frederick County
The Historical Society of Frederick County, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to local history, research and education, we are a dynamic, nonprofit organization that recognizes Frederick County, Maryland’s significant Historical impact on our state, nation, and world. We excel in engaging and interactive experiences that are relevant, accessible, and meaningful to all people.
The Archives and Research Center
The HSFC’s Archives and Research Center (ARC) consists of library and archival collections relating to Frederick County history. Users come to the ARC to pursue family, and local history projects using a variety of resources including but not limited to books, published family histories, genealogy and local history vertical files, manuscript collections, diaries, photographs, maps and videos. The collection also contains published records of Frederick’s parent county, Prince George’s from 1696 until 1748, when Frederick County was established. Records of neighboring counties that were later formed out of Frederick County (Montgomery, Washington, Allegany, Garrett, and Carroll) also can be found here. Published indices to land patent records from 1679 to 1773 are available, as well as immigration and migration records and records from the adjoining states of Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Our collection catalog is available online, but here we hope to offer more detailed information about the HSFC’s archival collections, new collections coming in to the Historical Society, the projects we are working on, and the people who make it all happen.
The Archives and Research Center is open Thursday through Saturday, from 10am to 4pm. Daily admission to the ARC is $6 for adults, $3 for youth aged 12-18, and there is no charge for children under 12 years of age. Members of the Historical Society of Frederick County receive free admission to the Archives and Research Center, for information about membership, click here.
Research services are available for users upon request. The charge for a two-hour search is $25.00 ($20.00 for HSFC members), which also covers the cost of fifteen (15) copies. Additional copies are 30¢ each. Payment is made for services rendered. The Historical Society of Frederick County cannot guarantee successful results for each search. To request a Basic Search, please fill out the Research Order Form as completely as possible and return it with your check made payable to the Historical Society of Frederick County. You can expect a reply within six weeks.
If you are simply requesting copies of specific pages or materials, please indicate the sources(s) and page number(s) needed. There is a $1.00 fee for each search and a 30¢ fee for each copy made.
The Historical Society of Frederick County realizes the visual value of its collections for a wide variety of educational, commercial, and public relations applications. With this in mind it is the policy of the Historical Society of Frederick County to make available reproductions of its collections subject to conditions, procedures and fees. These documents outline the policy for duplicating photographs and other historic graphics in the collections of the Archives and Research Center at the Historical Society of Frederick County (HSFC) for both personal and commercial use.

Policies and Procedures
1. The Archives & Research Center collection is non-circulating.
2. Researchers may not take items such as handbags, backpacks, briefcases, and coats into the Reading Room; secure lockers are provided for the storage of such materials.
3. Prior arrangments are required for access to archival holdings. In some cases, materials will require retrieval from an off-site storage facility.
